San Francisco challenges Trump’s sanctuary city order

(CNN)San Francisco on Tuesday became the first city in the US to file a lawsuit over President Donald Trump's executive order targeting sanctuary cities.

Signed January 25, the order aims to crack down on sanctuary cities, the term for jurisdictions with policies that limit cooperation between or involvement with federal immigration enforcement.

The order threatens to withhold federal funding from cities that hinder efforts to capture and deport undocumented immigrants. It contends they harm public safety.

Its law does not prevent undocumented immigrants from being prosecuted for criminal activity.

In general, the law prohibit city employees from using city funds or resources to assist in the enforcement of federal immigration law, unless required by federal or state law. They specifically prohibit local law enforcement officers from cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement requests to hold people eligible for release on immigration offenses, and limit when local law enforcement officers may give ICE advance notice of a person's release from local jail.

What's at stake?

The order deprives San Francisco of its sovereign power to choose how it devotes resources and forces it "to carry out the agenda of the Federal government," the lawsuit alleges.

San Francisco receives more than $1.2 billion a year in federal funding, most of which goes to health care, nutrition and other safety net programs, the city said in a statement.

"The Executive Order threatens the loss of more than $1 billion in federal funds that support vital services, the loss of community trust, and the loss of San Francisco's sovereign authority to set and follow its own laws on matters appropriately and historically within the control of local government."

Washington (CNN)Within minutes of President Donald Trump's selection of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, Democrats who will lead the fight in the Senate delivered scathing assessments -- but held fire on perhaps the most important question facing them: whether they will filibuster the nomination.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer immediately said he had "serious doubts" about Gorsuch and hinted at a Democratic filibuster, saying the nominee would need to the support of 60 senators to be confirmed, but stopped short of committing to the tactic.

"Make no mistake, Senate Democrats will not simply allow but require an exhaustive, robust, and comprehensive debate on Judge Gorsuch's fitness to be a Supreme Court Justice," Schumer said Tuesday night.

On the surface, Senate Democrats stuck to a firm but somewhat noncommittal message that hinted at the behind-the-scenes debate at the Capitol over whether Democrats will filibuster.

If they choose to hold up his nomination unless he can win 60 votes, Democrats risk spurring Republicans to use the "nuclear option" to rewrite the rules to only require 51 votes for confirmation.

Republicans hold a 52-48 majority in the Senate, meaning they would still need to find the support of eight Democrats without the nuclear option.

It's possible moderate Democrats facing tough re-election battles could be plucked away by Republicans to support Gorsuch. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, a North Dakota Democrat, and Sen. Joe Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat, issued muted statements Tuesday night.

"I look forward to meeting with Judge Gorsuch, examining his record, and making a determination of whether to provide my consent. Just as I have all along, I urge my colleagues to put partisan politics aside and allow the vetting process to proceed," Manchin said.

And Sen. Angus King, an independent from Maine who votes with Democrats, hesitated to go after Gorsuch, saying he wants the nominee to go through a thorough vetting before making a decision.

Democrats, meanwhile, are already facing intense pressure from a liberal base fired up after Trump's inauguration, the immigration ban and a perception that some senators, including Schumer, have been soft on Trump's Cabinet picks.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, a veteran liberal from San Francisco, laid out her opposition in stark terms at a CNN town hall Tuesday night.

"If you breathe air, drink water or eat food, take medicine or in any other way interact with the courts, this is a very bad decision -- well outside the mainstream of American legal thought," Pelosi said.

Top Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee, who will spend the coming months vetting (and potentially blocking) Gorsuch announced "deep concerns" with his selection.

"I have deep, serious concerns about Judge Gorsuch," said Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat. "An extreme ideologue on the court will threaten privacy rights including women's health care, worker and consumer protections, and public health and safety."

And Sen. Patrick Leahy, the former chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee who shepherded President Barack Obama's two nominees on to the high court, sought to hang Trump's immigration ban around Gorsuch's neck immediately.

"In light of the unconstitutional actions of our new President in just his first week, the Senate owes the American people a thorough and unsparing examination of this nomination," Leahy said.

Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz hinted at the idea of cracking open the "nuclear option" if Democrats when asked how Republicans should respond to a filibuster.

"The Democrats will not succeed in filibustering Judge Gorsuch," Cruz told CNN's Jim Acosta.

Original Mary Tyler Moore Show House Is For Sale, And The Interior Is Gorgeous

If you watched TheMary Tyler Moore Showin the 1970s, then you’re probably familiar with the stone Victorian mansion her character, Mary Richards, lived in on the show, along with her best friend, Rhoda.

The three-story home is classically gorgeous, with iron railings, decorative trim, and a turret (where Rhoda lived).

Now, it’s on the market.

Mary Tyler Moore has been in the public’s thoughts since her death at the age of 80after a period of declining health, but it happens to be a coincidence that her TV home is now for sale.

While the exterior of the home was used in the show, shots of the interior were actually filmed on a Hollywood set. In fact, Mary Tyler Moore never even visited the house until 1996 because she was in California during the filming of the show and this house was not anywhere near the Hollywood set.

The show was set in Minneapolis, so the creators used a real Minneapolis house. This one is located at 2104 Kenwood Parkway.

Today, it’s on the market for $1.7 million, and the inside is just as elegant as the outside. Until now, though, most people have only known the exterior and were left wondering what it looks like inside.

After several renovations since the house’s construction in 1900, it’s not very much like the apartment you might have seen on TV!

If you watchedThe Mary Tyler Moore Show on TV, then this house probably looks familiar to you.

That’s because this is the house where Mary Tyler Moore’s character Mary Richards lived, along with her friend, Rhoda, on the show.

The house is located in Minneapolis, but on the show, only the exterior was ever seen.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show follows a fictionalized version of Mary Tyler Moore, an independent career woman living and working in Minneapolis in the 1970s. The show ran for seven years and focused on her relationships with coworkers and friends.

This photo, from the finale, shows Mary with costars Cloris Leachman and Valerie Harper.

Hooked on Houses

On the show, the interior of the home was actually shot on a set in Hollywood.

The apartment Mary Richards lived in was supposed to be on the third floor, and set designers even replicated the arched window on the third floor of the Kenwood Parkway.

Here’s what the house looks like today. It’s still a beautiful house and has been lovingly taken care of since it was built in 1900.

It’s a very large house, with 9,500 square feet over three stories, and has seven bedrooms and nine baths.

In the show, it was set up to look as though the house was divided into separate apartments, but in truth the house is one unit.

Inside, there are plentyof Victorian decorative elements like wood paneling, bay windows, and lots of elegant details like the inlaying on the floors.

Ironcially, Mary Tyler Moore herself never visited the house during the show’s run, as she was filming in Hollywood. She only visited the house for the first time in 1996, much to the thrill of the locals.

The house is large and elegant, and it’s easy to imagine it not only as the modern apartment of a career woman in the 1970s, but you can also picture a wealthy Victorian family living here in the 1900s.

Of course, the house has been renovated for modern needs. If you like to cook, this is the kitchen for you. It has not one butfour ovens.

Upstairs, there are seven bedrooms, and the master suite also includes a sitting room and a fireplace.

The master suite also has its own bathroom.

The arched windows in Mary Richards’ apartment, on the third floor, are part of a family sitting room today.

There’s also a rooftop deck with a hammock where you can soak up some sun and take in the view of the treetops.
