Patty Brennan is an evolutionary biologistwho studies the diversity of genital structures in the animal kingdom, with a particular focus on female genitalia a much less studied realmof research than penises.

Twisted Sex

Mallard ducks sport a ballistic, corkscrew-shaped penis that catapults into the female reproductive tract in less than a third of a second.

This 20-centimeter (8-inch) erectile thrust in a relatively small bird elicited a follow-up question from Brennan: How has the female tract co-evolved to stack the deck in herreproductive favor?

When I dissected them, I almost fell off my chair, because there it was, this incredible labyrinth of structures in the vagina, said Brennan to Science Magazine.

The female has evolved pockets and spirals in her reproductive tract that can block the penis, meaning any unwanted suitors can give it a go but their attempt will likely be futile. This sexual tactic may provide females with reproductive control of whose sperm does and does not fertilize her eggs.

The histology of female ducks also reveals another co-evolutionary structure. We can see that the females have much thicker vaginal walls and so essentially they have reinforced their vaginas in order to be able to withstand these ballistic penises without rupturing, added Brennan.
