Doppelgängers have always been a source of endless fascination to us humans. So many factors determine what a person look like, including genetics, chance, and lifestyle and that’s why it’s so shocking whenever two identical strangers stumble upon each other.
There are apps out there that promise to find your celebrity doppelgänger, or animal doppelgänger – well now there’s an app which will find your famous portrait doppelgänger for you! 
One of the best examples of doppelgängers happened onboard a plane when a man named Neil Douglas sat down next to a stranger, Robert Stirling, who bore an uncanny resemblance to him. It was the perfect opportunity for a selfie and their picture went viral. 
Sadly, however, most people never get a chance to meet their doppelgängers. Unless you’re a celebrity with countless adoring fans around the world, you’re going to have to rely on chance if you ever want to stand a chance of meeting your nonbiological twin. 
Photography is a relatively recent invention, and while many people have had their similarities between them and their historical twins pointed out to them, few have found a doppelgänger in a famous portrait unless they’ve been an observant museum-goer… until now. The Google Arts and Culture app enables users to upload a selfie of themselves and it will match it with their famous historical portrait doppelgänger. For some, the results have been surprisingly accurate – and for others, less so.
“This Google Arts and Culture app is pretty amazing. Feel real strong about my 40%,” wrote musician Pete Wentz. 
“Torn between which one I think is [a] better likeness with the Google Arts and Culture app,” an impressed Felicia Day added.
Twitter user Lena Cuisine couldn’t help but find the context of her historical doppelgänger funny, writing, “I’m a study for death, and proud of it!”
“Just got owned by the Google Arts and Culture app,” added a bemused Twitter user, Adam Morris.
“GO HOME GOOGLE ARTS AND CULTURE APP. YOU’RE DRUNK,” wrote a woman named Kim Windyka, clearly unhappy with her doppelgänger. 
It’s easy to assume that the chances of having a doppelgänger are quite slim, but they’re actually higher than what most people think. An assistant professor at Cornell University said to Live Science “that there’s “only so much genetic diversity to go around” so they’re bound to occur.
A little-known fact about doppelgängers is that there are a lot of superstitions surrounding them. If you see a friend or family member’s non-related twin, it’s said to be an omen of bad luck, and if you encounter you’re own, well, you might as well start planning your funeral… So Kim K could be in trouble! 
Although we doubt any users of the Google Arts and Culture app will need to do that. They’re mostly delighted with the results. “I downloaded the Google Arts and Culture app to do that selfie comparison game and all I got instead was an amazing resource that has nourished my soul and already immensely improved my quality of life,” wrote Twitter user Anthony Oliveira. 
The only problem with the app is that it’s not currently available everywhere yet. “Nobody could possibly begin to understand how upset I am that the Google Arts and Culture portrait selfie feature is not yet available in my region,” wrote a woman named Catland Rose. 
So if you’re unable to get your hands on it just yet, why not check out the world’s most uncanny celebrity doppelgängers?! They have to be seen to be believed… I literally thought a couple of them were the same person!
