Social media has been responsible for charitable phenomenons such as the Ice Bucket Challenge, which raised a reported $115 million for ALS research, the #NoMakeUpSelfie movement which raised $8 million in one week for Cancer Research and Kony 2012, the campaign to have the brutal Ugandan war lord taken down, which raised $20 million in one year – although Kony is still at large.
The success of these campaigns all have one thing in common: celebrity support. Donald Trump, Kim Kardashian, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Barack Obama and Tom Cruise, are only a few of the A-list names who have taken part in various viral fundraising efforts. So, when Hurricane Harvey and Irma caused chaos across the Atlantic, celebrities ensured that they assisted with the relief efforts. However, just when the world thought it couldn’t get any worse, Hurricane Maria began to form. Worryingly, the tropical cyclone has Puerto Rico in its sights, a country already torn apart by other extreme storms this year. This stricken situation prompted celebrities to take action once more, to ensure that relief efforts reach every corner of the globe… The #PuberMe campaign was created by comedian Nick Kroll and The Late Show host, Stephen Colbert. The campaign encourages celebrities to post a photograph of themselves from their awkward phase, and in return Colbert and Kroll will donate money to help people in Puerto Rico rebuild their lives after Hurricane Maria. The two funnymen, who are taking things very seriously in aid of Puerto Rico, went first: Quickly, their amusing campaign gained the attention of other celebrities who all joined in to share embarrassing photographs from their past…
