The breakdown of a relationship can have a devastating effect on a person’s mental health. Until her suicide in September 2015, Jim Carrey’s ex-girlfriend, Cathriona White, had seemingly been a happy young woman who had everything to live for.

In the wake of the 30-year-old make up artist’s death, a number of disturbing details about her relationship with Carrey emerged, including the fact that he reportedly gave her STDs, which led to the end of their three-year relationship. When the on-and-off couple were together, White, from County Tipperary, Ireland, suffered from depression and reportedly wrote in a 2012 message that she was “too messed up for anyone to love”. White had threatened to end her life a number of times during her relationship with Carrey. In 2013, she told him that “my blood is on your hands”. At the time of her death, the two weren’t together because she had been diagnosed with three STDs. Carrey claimed that White must have contracted the diseases before the two were together. However, her family claim that the star is to blame and have filed a lawsuit against him for knowingly infecting her. When White told Carrey that she feared she had an STD, he texted her back saying, “It could be from someone before me. Doesn’t show up until you’re really stressed.” Following the revelation that she had herpes, White told her therapist that she was unable to eat or sleep and even had anxiety-induced vomiting. She feared that no man would want to be with her again because she had an STD. After her herpes diagnosis, White was diagnosed with a further two STDs. Her therapist wrote in their notes, “[She] still feels that no one will want her as she is damaged both psychologically and physically with all the STDs.” It is believed that the STD revelation played a significant role in contributing to White’s suicide. Carrey has also been accused of supplying the prescription medications Ambien, Propranolol and Percocet that White used to end her life. The drugs came from bottles supplied to Carrey’s medical synonym Arthur King. The Hollywood star has denied all accusations made against him. In his counter case, he describes his ex-girlfriend as being a “beautiful, but immature and emotionally damaged woman”. White left a suicide note for Carrey in the room where she ended her life. By the time she was found, her body had begun to show signs of decomposition, showing that she had been dead for some time.

“I’m just not for this world. I’ve spent 3 days now in disbelief that you’re not here. I can go on brokenhearted and try to put the pieces back. I could, I just don’t have the will this time. I’m sorry you felt I wasn’t there for you. I tried to give you my best part.”

But now it has emerged that White wrote another note to Carrey in April 2013 during one of their tumultuous break ups, and it adds further weight to her family’s claim that the star is responsible for her untimely death.

“You did good things for me but being with you broke me down as a person Jim. I was promise Jekyll and instead I got Hyde.  Because I love you I would have stuck out Hyde all year and done everything he wanted to be with Jekyll for 5 of those but you threw me away when you absorbed anything worthwhile that was left of me.  You have not thought about the stigma I have to live with for the rest of my life, you have not apologized or once asked is there something you can do to make it better or even felt bad for it. You gave me HSV and HPV, I want you to apologize for it because you care enough to. I want you to understand that however little a thing seems to you, it ruins a girl’s life. Before you, I might not have had very much but I had respect, I was a happy person.  I loved life, I was confident and I felt good in my skin and was proud of most decisions I made, I met you, you introduced me to cocaine, prostitutes, mental abuse and disease. You did good things for me but being with you broke me down as a person.”

After this chilling note was made public by White’s family, Carrey revealed that he had paid her an undisclosed amount of money in 2013 not to go to the press with her STD story. The actor wrote on Twitter that he had made a “mistake” by settling the “false” claims made against him. He added that he was not going to do the same thing again when it comes to White’s family’s accusation that he is responsible for her death.
