Selfies are a key element of modern day culture. The reason for this could be attributed to our own vanity and a combination of the Kardashian sisters. Either way, the front-facing camera has revolutionized the way that we, as humans, perceive ourselves.
However, perception is specific to each individual. Something that Milly Smith discovered when she visited her doctor to discuss her mental health. Severely depressed, a teenage Smith was desperately seeking help. But, the doctor perceived her to be of no threat to herself. Now, at 24 years old and a mother, Smith is trying to raise awareness for mental health by taking selfies, after recently attempting to take her own life for the third time… Just a teenager, Smith decided to make an appointment with her doctor, to discuss her deep and dark thoughts that had been consuming her. “It took a tonne of courage to go there and I was in a very vulnerable state,” she recalls, speaking to TODAY. However, she was left feeling “crushed, invalidated and alone” when her doctor dismissed her for not “looking suicidal.” As the years cascaded by, Smith continued to struggle with her mental health, succumbing to the sinister thoughts on three occasions. However, it was her third unsuccessful suicide attempt that awoke the mother-of-one to a life of raising awareness for those with mental health issues. Smith, from Hull in England, has Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), a rare condition which makes it difficult for people to regulate their emotions. Approximately 1.6% of the population of the US suffer with the disorder, which causes mood swings, impulsively, conflicted personal relationships and low self-esteem. The irregularity of the disorder was perfectly captured by Smith, who shared a selfie of herself which she took just seven hours before she tried to end her life… The picture shows Smith bright and beautiful. To the naked eye, there is no hint that suicide is on the horizon. However, lying in wake is a sinister side of Smith’s personality waiting to strike. Explaining her thought process that dark day, Smith says:
“I had no idea I’d try to take my own life in the morning, I was smiling and loved the way my hair looked hence the selfie. Having BPD (undiagnosed for so long because the NHS wouldn’t listen) means that my mood can switch to suicidal in seconds over the slightest trigger.”
Smith now advocates for mental health awareness, by sharing motivational and inspirational posts with her 168,000 followers on Instagram. Her strong words of encouragement are helping others who also feel vulnerable to find power within themselves. “If all you did today was survive then YAS F**KING GET IT!!! Because surviving when you feel suicidal is hard work (worth it) but hard work,” Smith writes, in a post which has now garnered over 7,000 likes. “You can function with depression, some days you wouldn’t tell, other days it’s like what you see in the movies,” she writes in another post, to the applaud of 22,000 people. Smith’s campaign to educate people that those with suicidal thoughts can also be quite happy has been intensified by the tragic death of Linkin Park frontman, Chester Bennington, who took his own life earlier this year. Shortly after his death, his widow shared a video showing him laughing and joking just hours before he ended his own life. Despite her battle, Smith is helping to spread a message of positivity and love far and wide. Every day requires her to fight, not just for herself, but for the other people in her life who depend on her. So, if you know someone who is struggling with their mental health, please make sure they speak out and seek help.
