Princess Diana’s Final Words Are Finally Revealed, 20 Years After Her Death

There are certain dates throughout your life where you can precisely recall your exact location due to the horrifying events that took place on that day. For your grandparents, that date would likely be July 28, 1914 – the date that World War I was declared – for your parents, it could be November 22, 1963, the day JFK was assassinated.

Meanwhile, for those born after these events, there are two significant dates which shocked the world: September 11, 2001 – a date which needs no introduction – and August 31, 1997, the date Princess Diana died when the car she was traveling in crashed in a tunnel in Paris. The feeling of intense grief is still potent today, despite 20 years having passed since the people’s princess passed away. Every time that Prince William or Harry experience a significant life event, their mother’s void is clear to see. Her death shocked the world when it was announced in the summer on ’97. The princess, who was only 36-years-old at the time of her death, had lived a turbulent life, but nobody expected it to end in such a brutal and cruel way. The minute that Diana married Prince Charles in 1981, her life was probed and picked apart underneath the intense glare of the media spotlight, like a sample in a lab’s petri-dish, every aspect of Diana’s life was analyzed and scrutinized. So when, in 1997, she began to date Dodi Fayed, the son of an Egyptian billionaire, the paparazzi became the third party in the relationship. Wherever Dodi and Diana went, they followed. This was no different on the night of August 31, 1997, as the mother-of-two left The Ritz in Paris with Dodi – whose father owns the hotel. Desperate to escape the unrelenting flashes of the awaiting paparazzi’s cameras, the hotel’s security devised a plan to ensure that they’d be able to get away quickly and quietly. However, this plan, as we all know, would put the princess in more danger. A decoy vehicle had left The Ritz earlier to lure the waiting paparazzi away, allowing Henri Paul, the hotel’s deputy head of security, to drive the princess and Dodi, who’d snuck out the back exit, to escape to the latter’s apartment a short distance away. However, they did not manage to escape unseen and quickly the paparazzi were in hot pursuit. Diana and Dodi were in the back seat of the car, where it is believed they were not wearing their seatbelts. Paul was driving the Mercedes and Trevor Rees-Jones, a member of the Al-Fayed’s personal protection team was in the front seat. Approximately three minutes after leaving the hotel, Paul lost control of the vehicle while traveling through the Pont de l’Alma tunnel. At the time, the car was traveling at an estimated 65mph, and it later transpired that Paul had been under the influence of alcohol when the crash occurred. Immediately after impact, several photographers who’d been following on motorcycles rushed to the scene where they found the smoke rising from the crushed black Mercedes. Some tried to help by opening the doors, while others simply took photographs – an action later condemned by Prince Harry and the rest world. The police arrived 10 minutes later and an ambulance five minutes after the police. Firemen were also on the scene to try and extract the victims from the wreckage. It was one of these firemen that heard Princess Diana’s last words. Xavier Gourmelon claims that when they arrived, the princess was conscious and had her eyes open as they cut her from the mass of metal in which she was trapped. As Diana was gently placed on a stretcher she suffered cardiac arrest, but Gourmelon managed to resuscitate her. Once she began to breathe again, he thought there was no doubt that she’d survive. “We were very close to there and it took less than three minutes to reach it. My ten-man team was in two trucks and we were first to arrive,” Gourmelon, a paramedic with the fire department in Paris for 22 years, explained. “The car was in a mess and we just dealt with it like any road accident. We got straight to work to see who needed help and who was alive.”

“When I got to the car I could see the driver was already dead and there was nothing that could be done for him. Mr Fayed was in the back and in a bad condition, he had a cardiac arrest in the car and when he was taken out he was declared dead by a paramedic. The bodyguard in the front was conscious, but he was trapped and had very severe facial injuries.”

“He kept asking for the princess, saying, ‘Where is she? Where is she’? But my team told him to keep calm and not speak. I told him that none of my men spoke English so it was better for him to keep still and not move. I told him not to worry we were looking after everyone.”

It was then that Gourmelon turned his attention to the only female passenger in the car.

“The woman, who I later found out was Princess Diana, was on the floor in the back. She was moving very slightly and I could see she was alive. I could see she had a slight injury to her right shoulder but, other than that, there was nothing significant. There was no blood on her at all.”

“I held her hand and told her to be calm and keep still, I said I was there to help and reassured her. She said, ‘My God, what’s happened?’ I gave her some oxygen and my team and I stayed by her side as she was taken out of the car. To be honest I thought she would live. As far as I knew, when she was in the ambulance she was alive and I expected her to live. But I found out later she had died in hospital. It was very upsetting. I know now that there were serious internal injuries, but the whole episode is still very much in my mind. And the memory of that night will stay with me forever.”

Meanwhile, policeman Sebastien Dorzee remembers the scene a little differently. “Blood was coming out of her mouth and nose,” he said. “You could see a deep wound to her forehead… At the same time, she was rubbing her stomach. She must have been in pain. She turned her head towards the front of the car and saw the driver. She became agitated. Then she put her head down again and closed her eyes.”

Dodi Fayad, Henri Paul and Princess Diana would all die as a result of the injuries they sustained from the accident. The only survivor was Trevor Rees-Jones, who cannot recall anything about the accident – least of all how it happened. While speculation is still rife about the circumstances of that fateful night, one thing that the world is united on is their grief, which is still strong today despite 20 years having passed.
