Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood was visiting a former coworker at Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Florida, when duty suddenly called.

But this was no ordinary situation in fact, he was so unfamiliar with it that he was totally paralyzed when itunfolded before his eyes.

A nurse ran screaming toward him. She said a pregnant mom had just gone into labor in the parking lot of the hospital, and she needed assistance.

The sheriff said that his “legs were like cement” when the nurse gave him directions to hold the woman’s 2-year-old daughter while she took care of the mother.

He added that, though he’d witnessed the birth of his three daughters, nothing could have prepared him for a moment like that. He did what he could, despite not being able to help with the birth itself.

He toldWOFL FOX 35: “I’m thinking to myself, ‘Boy, I would rather be out chasing someone with a gun that I know how to do!”

But at such a sensitive time, any and all helping hands are welcome!

The mother, Heidi, and her newborn were taken into the hospital after the birth. Both are currently healthy and happy. Afterward, the sheriff even snapped a photo with the nurse who grabbed him in the parking lot.

Please SHARE if you would have been comforted by Sheriff Mike Chitwood’s presence if you found yourself in such a precarious situation!
