Depression is a very common mental health condition. Anyone who has had the misfortune of experiencing it firsthand will know just how mentally, emotionally and physically debilitating it can be. Whilst many recover, some suffer for life.

But now it’s emerged that actor Jim Carrey no longer has depression. In 2004, Jim Carrey delved into his troubling experience with the illness in a very candid interview with CBS. However, 13 years on from that interview, the comedic actor is claiming that he no longer has depression. Carrey who is loved worldwide for his animated persona and impressive catalog of screwball comedies didn’t have the easiest of childhoods. And as it turns out, his humor emerged from a very dark place. Carrey explained in the interview with CBS that he developed intense feelings of depression from a young age because he “had a sick mom” and “wanted to make her feel better”. When he was 12 years old, his father lost his job as an accountant and the family began to struggle financially. As a result, Carrey felt immense pressure on his young shoulders, and when he was just 16, he dropped out of high school to bring in extra money. It wasn’t long before a teenage Carrey began working eight-hour shifts in a factory. By his own admission, the experience made him want to “bash somebody’s head in”. He had gone from a “straight-A student to not wanting to know anybody’s name, and not wanting to make a friend.” Carrey then made some very interesting and eye-opening remarks about how he viewed his own depression and depression in general. “I don’t think human beings learn anything without desperation,” Carrey explained to CBS. “Desperation is a necessary ingredient to learning anything or creating anything. Period. If you ain’t desperate at some point, you ain’t interesting.” Carrey also admitted to being a long-term user of the anti-depressant medication Prozac – also known as fluoxetine. However, he claims that at a certain point he realized he had to stop taking it because “everything’s just okay”. In fact, over the years, the 55-year-old actor has shunned all forms of medications and stimulants including coffee. Now in a recent interview, Carrey has claimed that depression no longer “immerses” him and that he no longer feels unable to cope when he is feeling down. Things are now so good that he has said that his depression is completely gone. “At this point, I don’t have depression,” Carrey revealed. “There is not an experience of depression. I had that for years, but now, when the rain comes, it rains, but it doesn’t stay. It doesn’t stay long enough to immerse me and drown me anymore.” Remarkably these comments have been made at a time in his life when you would assume the Liar Liar actor would be feeling an immense sense of hopelessness and despair. In 2015, the actors on and off girlfriend Cathronia White took her own life. Soon afterward 30-year-old White’s mother (Brigid Sweetman) and estranged husband (Mark Burton) sued the actor in relation to her death, and a number of disturbing claims were made about their relationship, many of which have portrayed Carrey in a disturbing light. He had a rocky relationship with his stylist ex-girlfriend and is accused of supplying her with pills she eventually used to end her own life. He is also accused of intentionally withholding information on his sexual health status and infecting her with STDs. You can find out more about the accusations against Carrey below: Carrey will be facing trial in April 2018 for the wrongful death of Cathriona White. But in spite of his current legal battles, he has continued to work in Hollywood and has even returned to the screen with the documentary Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond.  While it is good to hear that Carrey has recovered from depression, we also hope that the outcome of next year’s trial will be fair and just.
