Veteran Parks Her Car At Store, Then A Nasty Note Says She Has No Respect

Lieutenant Commander Rebecca Landis Hayes, a former Navy physician and veteran, went to park her car in front of a Harris Tweeter grocery store last summer.

The Concord, North Carolina, woman was picking up a birthday cake when she parkedin the designated spot for veterans. When she got back to her car, she found a small notebook page tucked under her windshield.

The message written on it read:This parking is for Veterans, lady. Learn to read & have some respect.”

As any veteran would be, Rebecca was upset. She believed who ever wrote the message didn’t believe she had served because she was a woman.

“I’m sorry that your narrow misogynistic worldview can’t conceive of the fact that there are female veterans,” she wrote on Facebook. “I’m sorry that I have to explain myself to people like you. Mostly, I’m sorry that we didn’t get a chance to have this conversation face to face, and that you don’t have the integrity and intestinal fortitude to identify yourself, qualities the military emphasizes. Which leads to one question, I served, did you?”

Rebecca’s post went viral and about a week later, she discovered that a new note still anonymous had arrived at the medical practice where she works.

“I happened to come across your post on Facebook through a friend who shared your photo and status. I would like to apologize to you. I know it’s no excuse, but Ive seen so many young people park in retired vets spaces, along with handicap lately, and I lost my cool,” the new note said.

It turned out to be an apology from the same stranger who wrote the note.

I guess they kind of did some self-reflection, Hayes said. The apology seems to be sincere and I do appreciate that.
